What to look for in kitchen ceiling lighting

Layer general and task light. Ceiling fixtures give general light, but counters and the range often need light aimed at them. Combining recessed or flush lights with track heads or pendants helps avoid shadows where you prep food.

Compare lumens, not wattage. LED wattage says little about brightness. Look at the rated lumens for each fixture and plan enough fixtures to light the room evenly.

Choose color temperature and CRI. Warmer light (around 2700K to 3000K) feels cozy, while 4000K and up looks crisper. A higher CRI shows food and finishes more naturally, so it is worth checking.

Check dimmer compatibility. Many LED fixtures only dim with certain dimmer types, such as Triac, ELV or 0-10V. Confirm the dimming method in the spec sheet before you buy or replace switches.

Match the location rating and ceiling. Fixtures near a sink or in a humid area should be damp- or wet-rated. For recessed lights, confirm the cutout size, ceiling thickness and whether the fixture is IC-rated for insulation contact.
