How the editorial score works

The score rates documented features and practical tradeoffs on a 10-point scale, using the weighted criteria below. An 8 means strong support with one clear limit; a 9 means particularly complete support with minor limits. It is our editorial judgment from manufacturer information, not a hands-on test or a customer rating.

The order of the picks also reflects who each product suits best, so it is not decided by the score alone. More on our method

How we chose

We compared freestanding kitchen islands and rolling carts from established furniture and butcher block makers using each maker’s product page: top material, overall size, storage (drawers, shelves, cabinets), whether it has wheels and whether they lock, and what assembly is involved. We aimed for a spread from a small solid wood cart to a full-size island and a commercial-style butcher block cart.

What to look for in a kitchen island or cart

Measure your clearance first. Leave enough walkway around an island or cart so you can open the dishwasher, oven and cabinet doors and still pass by. Measure the floor space before comparing sizes, and remember a drop leaf needs extra room when it is raised.

Match the top to how you cook. Solid wood and butcher block tops can be cut on or refinished, but need regular oiling. Veneer, laminate, stone and stainless steel tops are easier to wipe clean but are not meant to be cut on directly.

Decide between fixed and rolling. A stationary island feels more like built-in furniture, while a cart can move to the stove, the table or out of the way. If you choose wheels, look for locking casters so the cart stays put while you chop.

Think about the storage you need. Open shelves are quick to reach but show everything; drawers hold utensils and tools; enclosed cabinets hide small appliances. Check the stated load limits if you plan to keep heavy items on a shelf.

Check height and assembly. Most islands and carts are close to standard counter height, around 34 to 36 inches, so check the exact height if you want it to line up with your counters. Flat-packed models need home assembly, and large islands may arrive in several boxes.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a kitchen island and a kitchen cart?

An island is usually larger and stays in place, while a cart is smaller and rolls. The IKEA TORNVIKEN is a 49 5/8 x 30 3/8 inch free-standing island with no wheels, while the IKEA BEKVÄM, IKEA FÖRHÖJA, Winsome Langdon and John Boos Cucina D'Amico are carts on wheels or casters.

Do kitchen carts have locking wheels?

Some do and the makers say so. The John Boos Cucina D'Amico has commercial grade 3-inch locking casters, and the Winsome Langdon has four wheels with two that lock. IKEA does not mention locking wheels for the BEKVÄM or FÖRHÖJA.

Can I cut directly on a kitchen island top?

Only if the maker says the top is meant for it. John Boos describes the 5-inch end grain maple top of the Cucina D'Amico as a cutting surface. The IKEA tops are solid wood or oak veneer that IKEA says can be sanded and re-treated, but they are presented as work tops rather than cutting boards.

Do kitchen islands need assembly?

Most flat-packed models do. IKEA provides assembly instructions for the TORNVIKEN, BEKVÄM and FÖRHÖJA, and the TORNVIKEN arrives in three packages. Winsome lists assembly as required for the Langdon; John Boos does not state assembly details for the Cucina D'Amico, which is made to order.

What is the best rolling kitchen island?

It depends on how you use it. The John Boos Cucina D'Amico has a 5-inch end grain maple top on commercial grade 3-inch locking casters, but it weighs 135 lb and is made to order. The Winsome Langdon is a drop leaf cart with two drawers and four wheels, two of which lock, and the IKEA FÖRHÖJA is a slim birch cart whose locking wheels are not mentioned.

How much space do I need around a kitchen island?

Leave enough walkway around the island or cart to open the dishwasher, oven and cabinet doors and still pass by. Measure your floor space before comparing sizes, and remember a drop leaf, such as the Winsome Langdon, needs extra room when it is raised. In a narrow kitchen the IKEA FÖRHÖJA is just under 17 inches deep.

What is the best kitchen island for a small kitchen?

The IKEA BEKVÄM is the compact choice, a solid beech cart with a footprint of 22 7/8 x 19 5/8 inches, though each tier is rated for only 20 lb. The Winsome Langdon suits a small kitchen that sometimes needs more counter, since its drop leaf top extends for prep or a small dining table. The IKEA FÖRHÖJA is the pick for narrow kitchens that need a long, shallow work surface.
