What to look for in kitchen bar stools

Measure counter height first. Measure from the floor to the underside of your counter or island and choose a seat height that leaves comfortable knee room. Counter and bar heights differ, so check the exact seat height rather than relying on the product name.

Back or backless. Backless stools tuck fully under the counter and suit quick meals, while stools with backs are more comfortable for longer sitting. Think about who will use them and for how long.

Swivel and adjustability. A swivel seat makes it easier to get on and off and to turn toward the room. Height-adjustable stools help when counter heights vary or when children and adults share the same seats.

Seat material and cleaning. Plastic, wood, vinyl and metal wipe clean easily after spills, while fabric and leather feel softer but need more care. In a busy kitchen, an easy-clean seat can matter more than looks.
