Soft white

Best forSmall or dim kitchens and anyone who wants a timeless backdrop

Soft whites and off-whites are the safe, bright choice for kitchen walls. Benjamin Moore lists Simply White OC-117 (LRV 89.52) and Chantilly Lace OC-65 (LRV 90.04) among its most sought-after kitchen wall colors, and Sherwin-Williams recommends a bright, creamy white such as Alabaster SW 7008 (LRV 82) to open up a smaller kitchen. They also let colored cabinets, islands and backsplashes stand out.

Advantages

  • Very high LRV (about 82–90) reflects the most light; Sherwin-Williams notes lighter tints help spaces without much sunlight
  • Benjamin Moore calls creamy off-whites a timeless look that lets cabinets and backsplashes add the color

Drawbacks

  • Lighting changes how whites cast more than other colors, so sample them through the day (Benjamin Moore)
  • In north-facing kitchens, cool whites can look cold; Sherwin-Williams suggests warm undertones there

Warm neutral

Best forNorth-facing kitchens and wood or cream cabinets

Warm beiges and greiges make a kitchen feel cozy without adding strong color. Sherwin-Williams suggests a welcoming beige such as Whisper SW 9591 (LRV 45) or Limewash SW 9589 (LRV 67) for a warmer, cozier feel. Benjamin Moore names Hush AF-95 (LRV 57.09) and Monroe Bisque HC-26 (LRV 58.35) among the neutrals most sought after for kitchen walls.

Advantages

  • Balances cool light: Sherwin-Williams recommends warm neutrals for north-facing rooms
  • Gives a warmer, cozier feel than white (Sherwin-Williams)

Drawbacks

  • In south-facing rooms with warm light, very warm colors can look too strong at times (Sherwin-Williams)
  • Sherwin-Williams' Whisper and Limewash come only in its Designer Color Collection paints

Light gray

Best forSunny south-facing kitchens and modern white or stainless kitchens

Light grays read clean and modern and pair easily with white cabinets and stainless steel. Benjamin Moore lists Gray Owl OC-52 (LRV 64.51), a use-anywhere light gray with a cool, crisp cast, among its most sought-after kitchen wall colors, and calls Classic Gray OC-23 (LRV 73.67) an ultra-light gray that can work as an off-white. Sherwin-Williams picks Repose Gray SW 7015 (LRV 58) for south-facing rooms.

Advantages

  • Benjamin Moore names grays, with creamy off-whites, as classic neutrals for a timeless kitchen
  • Light grays keep fairly high LRVs (about 58–74), so the room stays bright

Drawbacks

  • Cool grays can make a north-facing kitchen look colder; Sherwin-Williams advises avoiding cool undertones there
  • Gray undertones (blue, green or warm) vary, so sample next to your cabinets and counters

Benjamin Moore suggests airy light blues such as Ocean Air 2123-50 (LRV 71.84) with glass-front cabinets, and describes Palladian Blue HC-144 (LRV 60.4) as a soft, airy blue-green.

Advantages

  • Warm southern light makes cool tones read more neutral (Sherwin-Williams)
  • Light blues stay bright, with LRVs of about 57–72

Drawbacks

  • Cool undertones make north-facing rooms look colder (Sherwin-Williams)
  • Blue and blue-green can shift between gray and green in different light, so sample first

Soft green

Best forKitchens with wood, white cabinets or lots of plants and daylight

Soft greens bring a natural, earthy feel to a kitchen. For kitchen walls, Benjamin Moore suggests pale greens such as Dune Grass 492 (LRV 66.62) and Fernwood Green 2145-40 (LRV 56.76), and it pairs October Mist 1495 walls with darker green shelving. Sherwin-Williams Sea Salt SW 6204 (LRV 63) is a cool, muted green with blue undertones that it suggests setting off with white trim.

Advantages

  • Gives an earthy, natural feel (Benjamin Moore)
  • Pale greens keep LRVs of about 57–67, so the room stays light

Drawbacks

  • Blue-leaning greens such as Sea Salt can feel cold in north-facing rooms (Sherwin-Williams on cool undertones)
  • Greens vary from warm to cool undertones, so check samples in your own light

Warm yellow and terracotta

Best forCool north-facing kitchens and white cabinets that need contrast

Warm yellows and terracottas add cheer and warmth. Benjamin Moore lists sunny Philadelphia Cream HC-30 (LRV 69.12) and Soleil AF-330 (LRV 79.4) among its most sought-after kitchen wall colors, and shows saturated yellow walls adding zing to a white kitchen. Sherwin-Williams says its reddish-orange Cavern Clay SW 7701 (LRV 20) creates a warmhearted, welcoming atmosphere in a kitchen.

Advantages

  • Warm undertones balance cool north light (Sherwin-Williams)
  • Light yellows stay bright (LRV about 69–79) while adding color (Benjamin Moore)

Drawbacks

  • In warm south-facing light, warm colors can look too bold at times (Sherwin-Williams)
  • Deeper terracottas are darker (Cavern Clay has an LRV of 20), and Benjamin Moore advises a deep base primer for darker hues

Buying guides for this project

For most kitchens, a soft white or warm off-white is the best wall color: off-whites such as Simply White and Chantilly Lace top Benjamin Moore’s list of most sought-after kitchen wall colors, and their high light reflectance keeps a busy room bright. Choose a warm neutral or warm yellow for cool north-facing kitchens, light gray or pale blue for sunny south-facing ones, soft green for an earthy feel, and use an eggshell, satin or semi-gloss finish so the walls can be washed.

How we compared

We grouped the most-recommended kitchen wall colors into six families and checked each against the paint makers’ own guidance: Benjamin Moore’s kitchen color page and kitchen ideas guide, Sherwin-Williams’ kitchen color page, Color of the Year archive and its advice on choosing colors by room orientation. Every named color comes with the light reflectance value (LRV) the maker publishes: Benjamin Moore lists LRV to two decimals, and Sherwin-Williams shows whole numbers. Finish advice comes from both makers’ sheen guides, and 2026 painting costs come from HomeAdvisor. We did not paint or test walls ourselves.

Match the color to your light and finish

  • Find which way the kitchen faces. Sherwin-Williams says north-facing rooms get cool light, so they suit warm undertones and higher LRVs. South-facing rooms get warm light, where cool colors read more neutral and very warm colors can look too strong.
  • Sample before you buy. Look at samples at different times of day, especially whites, as Benjamin Moore recommends.
  • Coordinate with the cabinets. Benjamin Moore suggests a monochromatic scheme, bold cabinets against neutral walls, or off-white walls with black cabinets.
  • Pick a washable sheen. Use eggshell, satin/pearl or semi-gloss rather than flat. A glossier sheen cleans more easily but shows wall flaws.
  • Prime deep colors. For terracotta or other dark hues, ask for a deep base primer (Benjamin Moore).

Frequently asked questions

What paint finish is best for kitchen walls?

Benjamin Moore recommends eggshell, satin/pearl or semi-gloss for kitchen walls because these finishes resist moisture, grease and stains. Sherwin-Williams says to choose semi-gloss for the easiest cleaning, and its sheen chart also marks eg-shel/satin, low-lustre and pearl for kitchen walls. Avoid flat paint, which Sherwin-Williams says is prone to scuffs and stains.

Is eggshell, satin or semi-gloss better in a kitchen?

Higher sheens clean more easily. Benjamin Moore says satin/pearl, semi-gloss and high gloss are easier to clean than flat, matte or eggshell, and that satin offers better stain resistance and durability than eggshell. The trade-off is that glossier finishes show wall flaws. Benjamin Moore warns that gloss accentuates blemishes, while Sherwin-Williams says flat or eggshell best hide imperfections.

What wall color makes a small or dark kitchen look brighter?

Choose a color with a high light reflectance value (LRV). Sherwin-Williams says lighter tints have higher LRVs and recommends higher-LRV colors for north-facing rooms. For a small kitchen, it suggests a bright, creamy white such as Alabaster SW 7008 (LRV 82). Benjamin Moore's Simply White and Chantilly Lace sit around LRV 90.

How often should kitchen walls be repainted?

HomeAdvisor says interior walls typically need repainting every three to 10 years, and kitchens may need it more often because of wear and tear. Regular gentle cleaning helps paint last. Benjamin Moore suggests warm water and mild dish soap with a soft sponge, after letting new paint cure for about two weeks.

What is the best color to paint a kitchen?

For most kitchens, a soft white or warm off-white. Benjamin Moore's Simply White and Chantilly Lace top its list of most sought-after kitchen wall colors, and their high light reflectance keeps a busy room bright. Choose a warm neutral or warm yellow for a cool north-facing kitchen, and light gray or pale blue for a sunny south-facing one.

What is the best white paint for kitchen walls?

Benjamin Moore lists Simply White OC-117 (LRV 89.52) and Chantilly Lace OC-65 (LRV 90.04) among its most sought-after kitchen wall colors. Sherwin-Williams recommends a bright, creamy white such as Alabaster SW 7008 (LRV 82) to open up a smaller kitchen. Sample whites through the day, since lighting changes how they look.

Pale blues feel fresh and calm. Sherwin-Williams recommends Upward SW 6239 (LRV 57) and Rainwashed SW 6211 (LRV 59) for south-facing rooms, while Benjamin Moore suggests airy light blues such as Ocean Air 2123-50 (LRV 71.84) and describes Palladian Blue HC-144 as a soft blue-green. Cool undertones can look colder in a north-facing kitchen.
