How the editorial score works

The score rates documented features and practical tradeoffs on a 10-point scale, using the weighted criteria below. An 8 means strong support with one clear limit; a 9 means particularly complete support with minor limits. It is our editorial judgment from manufacturer information, not a hands-on test or a customer rating.

  • Adhesion & surface fit35%
  • Odor, VOC & cleanup25%
  • Recoat speed20%

The order of the picks also reflects who each product suits best, so it is not decided by the score alone. More on our method

How we chose

We compared bonding, shellac and oil-based primers from established brands using the makers’ product pages and technical data sheets: resin type, the surfaces each is rated for, dry and recoat times, coverage, VOC content and cleanup. Where a product page left out a fact, we took it from the manufacturer’s data sheet and say so.

What to look for in a cabinet primer

Match the primer to the surface. Bare wood, previously painted wood, varnished wood and laminate all behave differently. Bonding primers are designed for slick or glossy surfaces, while stain-blocking primers matter more on bare wood with knots or on cabinets with water or grease stains.

Decide how much odor and cleanup you can handle. Water-based primers clean up with soap and water and have less odor. Oil and shellac primers often block stains better but need solvents for cleanup and good ventilation while you work.

Check recoat time. Some primers can be painted over within an hour, while others need several hours. If you want to prime and paint the same day, pick a fast-recoat primer and plan your work around it.

Make sure it works with your topcoat. Read both labels to confirm the primer suits the paint you plan to use. Some primers work under both oil and water-based paint, while others list limits on which topcoats they accept.

Consider tinting. If you are painting cabinets a dark or bold color, a primer that can be tinted toward the topcoat color can help the paint cover in fewer coats. Check how much colorant the primer allows.

Frequently asked questions

Do I really need to prime kitchen cabinets before painting?

In most cases, yes, because cabinets often have glossy, greasy or varnished finishes that paint will not grip well. Bonding primers such as INSL-X Stix, Sherwin-Williams Extreme Bond and KILZ Adhesion are made for hard, slick surfaces, and Zinsser B-I-N and Cover-Stain also block stains and wood knots. Clean and degrease the surface first whichever you choose.

Shellac, oil or water-based primer: which is best for cabinets?

Shellac primer like Zinsser B-I-N is the strongest stain and knot blocker here and recoats in 45 minutes, but it has strong fumes and cleans up with alcohol. Oil primer like Zinsser Cover-Stain bonds well and blocks stains but needs mineral spirits for cleanup. Water-based bonding primers like INSL-X Stix, Sherwin-Williams Extreme Bond and KILZ Adhesion are lower in VOC and clean up with soap and water.

Can I skip sanding if I use a bonding primer?

Sometimes, but a light scuff sand is still the safer choice. Zinsser says B-I-N and Cover-Stain stick without sanding, Sherwin-Williams says sanding may not be needed for most clean surfaces under Extreme Bond, and KILZ says Adhesion reduces or can eliminate sanding. KILZ still recommends testing adhesion on a small area first.

How long should primer dry before I paint cabinets?

Check the label for the recoat time. Zinsser B-I-N can be recoated in 45 minutes; Zinsser Cover-Stain, Sherwin-Williams Extreme Bond and KILZ Adhesion in about 1 hour; and INSL-X Stix in 3 to 4 hours. Cooler or more humid conditions make these times longer.

What is the best primer for kitchen cabinets?

INSL-X Stix Waterborne Bonding Primer is our best overall for most cabinet repaints, including glossy finishes, with soap-and-water cleanup and low odor. Choose Zinsser B-I-N shellac primer if you need to seal knots, grease or water stains. It has high VOC, is flammable, and needs denatured alcohol for cleanup.

What is the best primer and paint combination for kitchen cabinets?

Make sure the primer suits your topcoat by reading both labels. INSL-X Stix can be topcoated with almost any paint, including latex and oil, and Zinsser Cover-Stain works under oil or water-based topcoats. If you are painting a dark or bold color, a primer that can be tinted toward the topcoat color can help the paint cover in fewer coats.

What is the best primer for painting laminate kitchen cabinets?

Sherwin-Williams Extreme Bond Primer is our pick for laminate and other slick surfaces. It is a waterborne bonding primer that lists kitchen cabinets, laminates and varnished wood among its uses, and it recoats in 1 hour. KILZ Adhesion also bonds to Formica and other dense, glossy surfaces, but KILZ still recommends a small adhesion test before starting.
