White and warm white

Best forSmall or dark kitchens and anyone who wants a timeless look

White and off-white cabinets reflect light and make a kitchen feel bright and spacious, and Benjamin Moore says they suit almost any style. Proven picks include Benjamin Moore White Dove OC-17 (LRV 83.16) and Chantilly Lace OC-65 (LRV 90.04), and Sherwin-Williams Alabaster SW 7008 (LRV 82) and Pure White SW 7005 (LRV 84). If crisp whites look gray or blue in your light, Benjamin Moore suggests warmer off-whites such as White Dove or Simply White OC-117.

Advantages

  • Light colors make smaller kitchens feel more open and spacious (Benjamin Moore)
  • Works with virtually any style, from modern to farmhouse (Benjamin Moore)

Drawbacks

  • Lighter hues hide dirt less well than dark colors such as charcoal or black (Benjamin Moore)
  • Whites shift with lighting and can read too warm or too gray/blue, so they need sampling (Benjamin Moore)

Greige

Best forKitchens with mixed warm and cool finishes, or a softer look than white

Greige mixes gray and beige, so it sits between warm wood floors and cool stone or steel. Sherwin-Williams calls Agreeable Gray SW 7029 (LRV 60) its best-selling paint color and lists it, with Accessible Beige SW 7036 (LRV 58) and Repose Gray SW 7015 (LRV 58), among its cabinet paint trend colors. Benjamin Moore describes Revere Pewter HC-172 (LRV 55.05) as a bridge between warm and cool tones.

Advantages

  • Bridges warm and cool tones, so it pairs with many counters and floors (Benjamin Moore on Revere Pewter)
  • Mid-to-high LRVs (about 55–60) keep the room fairly bright (Benjamin Moore, Sherwin-Williams)

Drawbacks

  • Undertones vary from beige to gray, so match them to your countertop's undertones (Benjamin Moore)
  • Light shifts the look: Sherwin-Williams notes neutral colors can read warmer in south-facing rooms

Navy

Best forIslands, lower cabinets and two-tone kitchens with white walls or counters

Navy is the classic deep color for cabinets and islands. Benjamin Moore lists Hale Navy HC-154 (LRV 8.36), which it calls a use-anywhere navy, among the saturated colors homeowners love for cabinets and islands. Sherwin-Williams Naval SW 6244 (LRV 4) was its 2020 Color of the Year. Navy works especially well on an island or lower cabinets with white walls or uppers.

Advantages

  • Benjamin Moore counts navy among timeless cabinet colors, with rich nautical vibes
  • Dark colors hide dirt better than light ones (Benjamin Moore)

Drawbacks

  • Very low LRV (about 4–8) absorbs light, so a full navy kitchen can feel darker; Sherwin-Williams advises higher-LRV colors in rooms with little light
  • Deep colors need a deep base primer and usually two topcoats for full color (Benjamin Moore)
Sage and green

Sage and green

Best forKitchens with wood, brass or natural stone; a color that still reads as a neutral

Soft, gray-leaning greens add color while staying calm. Sherwin-Williams features Evergreen Fog SW 9130 (LRV 30), its 2022 Color of the Year described as green-meets-gray with a bit of blue, on its kitchen cabinet color page. Benjamin Moore's October Mist 1495 (LRV 46.54), a former Color of the Year it calls a gently shaded sage, and Sherwin-Williams Clary Sage SW 6178 (LRV 41) are lighter options.

Advantages

  • Benjamin Moore lists soft greens among timeless cabinet colors and says greens conjure nature
  • Mid-range LRVs (about 30–47) add color without the darkness of navy or black

Drawbacks

  • Gray-greens shift with light: Sherwin-Williams says cool undertones look colder in north-facing rooms
  • More of a trend pick than white; both makers' named sages were 2022-era Colors of the Year

Black

Best forLarge, well-lit kitchens, islands and modern or industrial styles

Black cabinets make a dramatic, high-contrast statement, especially against white walls and counters. Benjamin Moore shows Jet Black 2120-10 (LRV 4.71) in satin and pairs black with off-white walls for a polished look. Sherwin-Williams Tricorn Black SW 6258 (LRV 3) is a true black that it says works with any undertone, and it appears on Sherwin-Williams' cabinet paint trend list.

Advantages

  • Dark colors such as black hide dirt better than lighter hues (Benjamin Moore)
  • Pairs with white for classic contrast; a true black works with any undertone (Sherwin-Williams)

Drawbacks

  • The lowest LRVs (about 3–5) soak up light; Sherwin-Williams suggests its deep charcoal Iron Ore be used sparingly in well-lit spaces
  • Needs a deep base primer and usually two topcoats (Benjamin Moore)
Natural wood stain

Natural wood stain

Best forSolid wood cabinets, especially oak, and warm traditional or Scandinavian looks

A stain keeps the wood grain visible instead of hiding it under paint. Sherwin-Williams' DesignHouse sees nostalgic browns, organic finishes and warmer bleached and blonde stains gaining ground. Results depend on the species: Minwax says oak takes nearly any stain color, while maple and birch absorb unevenly and should get only light to medium stains after a pre-stain conditioner.

Advantages

  • Shows off natural grain; stain both changes color and highlights grain (Minwax)
  • Stained finishes need no waxing or wood oils to maintain them (Wolf)

Drawbacks

  • HomeAdvisor says staining works best on solid wood, not veneers, and recommends a stain darker than the original color
  • Color varies by species and with UV exposure, so new cabinets may not match old ones (Wolf); maple and birch can blotch (Minwax)

Buying guides for this project

For most kitchens, the best cabinet color is white or a warm white: Benjamin Moore calls whites and off-whites the most popular and timeless cabinet colors, and light cabinets make small kitchens feel more open. Pick greige for a soft neutral that bridges warm and cool finishes, navy or sage green for a classic color, black for drama in a bright room, and a natural wood stain if you have solid wood cabinets worth showing off.

How we compared

We grouped the most-recommended cabinet colors into six families and checked each against the paint makers’ own guidance: Benjamin Moore’s kitchen cabinet color pages and cabinet ideas guide, Sherwin-Williams’ kitchen cabinet color page, its Color of the Year archive and its industrial DesignHouse cabinet color trend forecast. Every named color comes with the light reflectance value (LRV) the maker publishes: Benjamin Moore lists LRV to two decimals, and Sherwin-Williams shows whole numbers. Staining advice comes from Minwax, care advice from cabinet maker Wolf, and 2026 professional painting and staining prices from HomeAdvisor. We did not paint or test cabinets ourselves.

How to choose your cabinet color

  • Start with what stays. Benjamin Moore suggests taking color cues from your countertop, backsplash, fixtures and flooring, and matching cabinet undertones to your countertop’s undertones.
  • Check the light. Sherwin-Williams says north-facing rooms get cool light, so warm undertones and higher LRVs work better there, while south-facing rooms can make warm colors look too strong.
  • Sample before you commit. View samples at different times of day, as Benjamin Moore recommends for whites.
  • Prime dark colors properly. For navy, black or deep green, ask for a deep base primer. Benjamin Moore recommends two topcoats for full color.
  • Mind the material. Paint hides grain; stain shows it. HomeAdvisor says staining works best on solid wood.

Frequently asked questions

What is LRV, and why does it matter for cabinet colors?

LRV (light reflectance value) is the percentage of light a color reflects, on a scale from 0 (absolute black) to 100 (pure white), as Benjamin Moore defines it. High-LRV whites (about 82–90) keep a kitchen bright, while navy and black (about 3–8) absorb light. Sherwin-Williams suggests higher-LRV colors for rooms with little natural light.

What paint finish is best for kitchen cabinets?

Benjamin Moore calls satin, semi-gloss and high-gloss finishes ideal for kitchen cabinets. Satin gives a soft, hand-rubbed look with better stain resistance than eggshell, while semi-gloss and high gloss are the easiest to clean. Use a dedicated cabinet enamel such as Benjamin Moore Advance or Sherwin-Williams Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel.

What cabinet color makes a small kitchen look bigger?

Light colors. Benjamin Moore says white, off-white and other light neutral cabinets tend to make smaller spaces, including kitchens, feel more open and spacious. Sherwin-Williams likewise recommends a bright, creamy white such as Alabaster SW 7008 to open up a smaller kitchen.

Which kitchen cabinet colors hide dirt best?

Benjamin Moore says dark colors such as forest green, charcoal gray, dark brown and black hide dirt better than lighter hues. Whatever the color, a durable cabinet paint also matters, since kitchen cabinets need repeated washing. Benjamin Moore points to its Advance Interior paint in satin, semi-gloss or high gloss.

What is the best white paint for kitchen cabinets?

Proven whites include Benjamin Moore White Dove OC-17 (LRV 83.16) and Chantilly Lace OC-65 (LRV 90.04), and Sherwin-Williams Alabaster SW 7008 (LRV 82) and Pure White SW 7005 (LRV 84). If a crisp white looks gray or blue in your light, Benjamin Moore suggests a warmer off-white such as White Dove or Simply White OC-117. Sample whites at different times of day before you commit.

What is the best blue for kitchen cabinets?

Navy is the classic deep blue for cabinets and islands. Benjamin Moore lists Hale Navy HC-154 (LRV 8.36) as a use-anywhere navy, and Sherwin-Williams offers Naval SW 6244 (LRV 4). Navy works especially well on an island or lower cabinets with white walls or uppers, and it needs a deep base primer and usually two topcoats.

What is the best green color for kitchen cabinets?

Soft, gray-leaning greens add color while staying calm. Sherwin-Williams features Evergreen Fog SW 9130 (LRV 30) on its kitchen cabinet color page, and Benjamin Moore's October Mist 1495 (LRV 46.54) and Sherwin-Williams Clary Sage SW 6178 (LRV 41) are lighter options. They suit kitchens with wood, brass or natural stone.
