How the editorial score works

The score rates documented features and practical tradeoffs on a 10-point scale, using the weighted criteria below. An 8 means strong support with one clear limit; a 9 means particularly complete support with minor limits. It is our editorial judgment from manufacturer information, not a hands-on test or a customer rating.

The order of the picks also reflects who each product suits best, so it is not decided by the score alone. More on our method

How we chose

We compared knife block and roll sets listed at about $150 or less from established cutlery brands, looking at which knives each set includes, forged versus stamped construction, block or roll storage, built-in sharpening, care instructions and warranty, using the manufacturers’ product pages. Where a maker publishes no price, we used a major US restaurant-supply retailer. We did not test these sets hands-on.

What to look for in a budget knife set

Check what is actually in the box. Piece counts include the block, shears, honing steel and steak knives. Look for the three knives you will use most, a chef’s knife, a paring knife and a serrated bread or utility knife, before counting extras.

Choose block, roll or drawer storage. A countertop block keeps knives handy and protects edges, but takes up counter space. A knife roll or in-drawer storage suits small kitchens and anyone who carries knives to work or class.

Look at construction and handles. Forged knives with a bolster feel heavier and more solid, while stamped knives are lighter and usually cheaper. Make sure the handle style suits your grip, since you will hold the chef’s knife every day.

Plan for sharpening. A honing steel or a block with a built-in sharpener helps keep edges aligned between proper sharpenings. Even inexpensive sets cut far better when they are honed regularly.

Read the care and warranty terms. Some budget sets are labeled dishwasher safe and others are hand wash only. A lifetime warranty is common at this price, but it usually covers defects, not wear or damage from misuse.

Frequently asked questions

How many pieces does a knife set really need?

Most cooking is done with a chef's knife, a paring knife and a serrated knife. The Henckels Solution 12-pc covers those three plus steak knives, shears and a honing steel, while the Mercer Genesis 4-Pc. Starter Set keeps it to a paring knife, utility knife and santoku. Bigger sets like the Henckels Statement 15-pc add a bread knife and two santokus.

Are budget knife block sets dishwasher safe?

Some are. Henckels lists the Statement 15-pc and Solution 12-pc knives as dishwasher safe, though it recommends hand washing for Solution. Chicago Cutlery says to hand wash and dry the Belmont and Avondale knives immediately, and Mercer says not to put Genesis knives in the dishwasher.

Should I choose a knife block or a knife roll?

A block like the Chicago Cutlery Belmont keeps knives on the counter and within reach, and both Chicago Cutlery blocks in this guide have a built-in sharpener. A roll like the Mercer Genesis 4-Pc. Starter Set stores flat in a drawer and is easy to carry to a class or a job.

What is the difference between forged and stamped knife sets?

Stamped knives, like those in the Henckels Statement and Solution sets, are cut from sheet steel and are lighter. Forged knives, like the Chicago Cutlery Avondale and Mercer Genesis, are shaped from heated steel and have a bolster, which adds weight and balance.

What is the best budget kitchen knife set?

The HENCKELS Solution 12-pc Knife Block Set is the best overall pick, with an 8-inch chef's knife, serrated utility knife, paring knife, six steak knives, shears and a honing steel. The Chicago Cutlery Belmont 13-piece is the best budget pick and includes a santoku, bread knife and a block with a built-in sharpener. The Mercer Genesis 4-Pc. Starter Set is the best knife roll, and the Chicago Cutlery Avondale is the best forged block set.
