What to look for in non-toxic kitchen utensils

Read the material description, not the product name. Words like ‘platinum’ or ‘natural’ in a product name do not always describe the material. Look in the specs for the exact wording, such as ‘platinum-cured silicone’, ‘FSC-certified’ or ‘18/10 stainless steel’, and for which certifications the maker actually claims.

Check what is inside silicone tools. Many silicone spatulas and spoons are built around a core for stiffness. Makers may use stainless steel, nylon or other materials, so check the core if you are trying to avoid plastic altogether.

Match the material to your pans. Wood and silicone are gentle on nonstick and ceramic coatings. Stainless steel tools are durable and easy to clean but are better suited to stainless, cast iron and carbon steel pans.

Think about cleaning. Silicone and stainless steel tools are often dishwasher safe. Wooden utensils usually need hand washing and drying upright, so factor in how much hand washing you are willing to do.

Check the heat rating. Silicone tools come with a maximum temperature from the maker. If you sear or cook at high heat, choose a tool with a rating that comfortably covers how you cook.
