How the editorial score works

The score rates documented features and practical tradeoffs on a 10-point scale, using the weighted criteria below. An 8 means strong support with one clear limit; a 9 means particularly complete support with minor limits. It is our editorial judgment from manufacturer information, not a hands-on test or a customer rating.

  • Certified reduction40%
  • Filter life & flow20%

    Manufacturer information

Best forMost households that want certified lead and PFOA/PFOS reduction from their existing faucet

This single-cartridge under-sink filter connects to the cold water line and sends filtered water through your existing faucet, so no extra faucet or plumber is needed. Aquasana says it is IAPMO certified to NSF/ANSI Standards 42, 53 (includes P473) and 401 for the reduction of over 96% of chlorine and chloramines, 99% of lead and microplastics, and 95% of PFOA/PFOS, while retaining minerals such as calcium, potassium and magnesium.

    Strengths

    • Certified to NSF/ANSI 42, 53 (incl. P473) and 401 for 78 contaminants, per Aquasana
    • Uses your existing faucet; twist-off cartridge replacement without disconnecting lines

    Weaknesses

    • Cartridge lasts 784 gallons or up to 6 months
    • Not reverse osmosis, so it is not certified for TDS reduction (Aquasana says it retains minerals)

    Manufacturer information

Best forRenters and DIYers who mainly want better-tasting water with rare filter changes

Waterdrop's compact direct-connect filter installs on the cold line with push-to-connect fittings and feeds your existing faucet. Waterdrop states it is NSF/ANSI 42 and 372 certified and describes its reduction of chlorine, odor, sediment and heavy metals as 'third-party tested', and its FAQ rates the WD-10UA cartridge at 12 months or 8,000 gallons.

    Strengths

    • Long filter life: 12 months or 8,000 gallons per Waterdrop's FAQ
    • Small footprint with push-to-connect, twist-and-lock installation

    Weaknesses

    • Certified only to NSF/ANSI 42 and 372; Waterdrop lists no NSF/ANSI 53 certification for lead or other health contaminants
    • Lower rated flow (0.75 GPM) than the Aquasana direct-connect filter

    • Performance Data Sheet shows NSF/ANSI 53 reductions for lead, mercury and total PFAS

    Weaknesses

    • Filter lasts up to 100 gallons or 3 months
    • Slow rated service flow (0.52 gallons per minute); PUR says it does not filter microbes

How we chose

We compared under-sink, reverse osmosis and faucet-mount filters from established water-filter brands using each maker’s product page and, where available, its Performance Data Sheet. We looked at which NSF/ANSI standards each system is certified to and for what, along with capacity, flow rate, installation, size and warranty, and we report contaminant claims only as the makers state them.

What to look for in a sink water filter

Check the certification, not just the claim. Look for the specific NSF/ANSI standard a filter is certified to and read the Performance Data Sheet. Standard 42 covers taste and odor such as chlorine, Standard 53 covers health contaminants such as lead, Standard 58 covers reverse osmosis and Standard 401 covers emerging contaminants.

Test or look up your water first. Your local water quality report or a home test tells you which contaminants you actually need to reduce. That helps you decide whether a carbon filter is enough or whether reverse osmosis makes sense.

Measure the space under your sink. Under-sink and reverse osmosis systems need room for the filter housing, and tank-style RO also needs space for a storage tank. Tankless RO units may also need an electrical outlet nearby.

Factor in replacement filters. Filters only work as rated when they are changed on time. Compare how many gallons or months each cartridge lasts and what replacements cost before you buy.

Consider installation and your faucet. Faucet-mount filters attach to a standard faucet, while under-sink systems connect to the cold water line and some need a separate faucet. If you rent or prefer not to do plumbing, choose a model you can install and remove easily.

Frequently asked questions

Which type of kitchen sink water filter should I choose?

A faucet-mount filter like the PUR PLUS PFM400H is the simplest because it attaches to the faucet without plumbing. Under-sink filters such as the Aquasana Claryum Direct Connect and Waterdrop WD-10UA connect to the cold water line and feed your existing faucet. Reverse osmosis systems like the iSpring RCC7 and Waterdrop G3P600 filter more finely but take more space and send some water to the drain.

Which of these filters are certified to reduce lead?

Look for NSF/ANSI 53 (health effects) or NSF/ANSI 58 (reverse osmosis). Aquasana says the Claryum Direct Connect is certified to NSF/ANSI 42, 53 and 401 for 99% lead reduction, PUR's data sheet lists lead under NSF/ANSI 53 for the PUR PLUS filter, and iSpring says the RCC7 is certified to NSF/ANSI 58. The Waterdrop WD-10UA is certified only to NSF/ANSI 42 and 372, so its heavy-metal reduction is not covered by a health-effects certification.

Does a reverse osmosis system need electricity or waste water?

It depends on the model. The iSpring RCC7 needs no power source and stores water in a tank, while the tankless Waterdrop G3P600 requires electricity and lists a 2:1 pure-to-drain ratio. Both send part of the incoming water down the drain as part of the RO process.

How often do I need to replace the filters?

Aquasana rates the Claryum Direct Connect at 784 gallons or up to 6 months, and PUR rates its faucet filter at 100 gallons or up to 3 months. Waterdrop's FAQ gives the WD-10UA 12 months or 8,000 gallons, and the G3P600 uses three filters rated for 6, 12 and 24 months.

What is the best kitchen sink water filter?

The Aquasana Claryum Direct Connect is the best overall pick: it connects to the cold water line and sends filtered water through your existing faucet. Aquasana says it is IAPMO certified to NSF/ANSI 42, 53 (including P473) and 401, including for lead and PFOA/PFOS. The cartridge lasts 784 gallons or up to 6 months.

What is the best water filter for a kitchen faucet?

The PUR PLUS Faucet Filtration System is the faucet-mount pick. It replaces your faucet aerator and has a lever to switch between filtered and unfiltered water, so you do not need to touch the plumbing. The filter lasts up to 100 gallons or 3 months, flow is slow at 0.52 gallons per minute, and PUR says it does not filter microbes.

What is the best kitchen water filter system?

For classic reverse osmosis, the iSpring RCC7 5-stage system is the tank-style pick and iSpring says the whole system is certified to NSF/ANSI 58. The Waterdrop G3P600 is the tankless premium option, rated at 600 GPD with a display faucet that shows TDS and filter life. The iSpring is bulky because of its separate storage tank, and the Waterdrop is the heaviest system here at 32.4 lb, so measure the space under your sink.
