How the editorial score works

The score rates documented features and practical tradeoffs on a 10-point scale, using the weighted criteria below. An 8 means strong support with one clear limit; a 9 means particularly complete support with minor limits. It is our editorial judgment from manufacturer information, not a hands-on test or a customer rating.

The order of the picks also reflects who each product suits best, so it is not decided by the score alone. More on our method

How we chose

We have not tested these cutting boards hands-on. We compared the manufacturers’ information on material, dimensions, weight, juice grooves and cleaning instructions, and chose boards that cover different kitchens: one large board for everything, wooden boards for cooks who enjoy caring for them, and a set for keeping raw meat and produce apart.

What to look for in a cutting board

Size. A board of about 18 × 12 inches gives room to chop and push ingredients aside. Check that it fits your sink if you wash it by hand, and your counter depth.

Wood or plastic. Wooden boards are kind to knife edges and look good, but they need hand washing, drying and regular oiling. Plastic boards can go in the dishwasher; replace them when they are deeply scored.

Edge grain or end grain. End-grain boards show fewer knife marks and are heavier and more expensive. Edge-grain boards are lighter and easier to move.

Grip and grooves. Non-slip feet or a damp towel underneath keep a board from sliding. A juice groove helps when carving roasts.

More than one board. Separate boards for raw meat and ready-to-eat food make kitchen hygiene easier. Pair a good board with a sharp knife from our kitchen knife set guide.

Frequently asked questions

Should I choose a wooden or plastic cutting board?

Choose around your care routine. The selected Teakhaus boards are teak and need hand washing, drying and regular oiling. The OXO boards and Joseph Joseph Folio boards can go in the dishwasher. Plastic surfaces show knife marks over time, while wooden boards need more ongoing care.

How do the two Teakhaus boards differ?

The 805 is an edge-grain teak board measuring 18 × 14 × 1 inches and weighing 4 pounds. The 311 is end-grain teak, 16 × 12 × 1.5 inches and 10 pounds. Both are reversible with juice canals and hand grips; consider lifting and washing as well as surface size.

Is one large board or a board set more useful?

The OXO Carving and Cutting Board offers a large 21.1 × 14.5-inch surface with a liquid channel and pour corners. Joseph Joseph Folio provides four color-coded boards for assigning different ingredients. Choose the preparation space you need, while allowing room for either a large board or the storage case.

Can the boards and their storage case be cleaned together?

The Folio boards are dishwasher safe, but the case should be wiped with a soft damp cloth. Both selected OXO boards are dishwasher safe. Teakhaus boards need hand washing and towel drying, with mineral oil applied two to three times per month.

What is the best cutting board for the kitchen?

The OXO Good Grips Carving and Cutting Board is the best overall pick: a large 21.1 x 14.5 in dishwasher-safe board with non-slip feet and a juice channel. If you want wood, the Teakhaus 805 is the pick for everyday use, and the Joseph Joseph Folio set suits cooks who want separate color-coded boards. The OXO Good Grips Everyday Cutting Board is the budget option.

What size should the best kitchen cutting board be?

A board of about 18 x 12 inches gives you room to chop and push ingredients aside. The Teakhaus 805 is 18 x 14 inches, while the OXO Carving and Cutting Board is larger at 21.1 x 14.5 inches, which needs more counter and storage space. Check that the board fits your sink if you wash it by hand.
