What to look for in an air fryer

Match capacity to your household. Small 2-quart models suit one or two people, while 5 to 6 quarts covers most families. Basket shape matters too: a wide, shallow basket lets food sit in one layer, while a deep basket holds more fries but may need shaking.

Decide between one basket, two baskets or an oven. Two baskets let you cook a main and a side at once, and an air fryer oven adds toasting and baking space. Both take up more counter room than a single basket, so measure the spot where it will live.

Check the coating and cleanup. Look for what the manufacturer actually says about the nonstick coating, such as ceramic or PFAS-free, rather than assuming. Also check which parts are dishwasher safe; some brands list only the crisper plate.

Look at power and functions. Full-size air fryers draw a lot of power, so plug them straight into a wall outlet rather than a power strip. Extra presets are handy, but make sure the functions you will really use, such as dehydrate or proof, are included.
