An 8 means strong support with one clear limit; a 9 means particularly complete support with minor limits. It is our editorial judgment from manufacturer information, not a hands-on test or a customer rating.

The order of the picks also reflects who each product suits best, so it is not decided by the score alone. More on our method

How we chose

We compared what each manufacturer says its cleaner is approved for and which surfaces to avoid, the stated ingredients and warnings, certifications such as EPA Safer Choice and Leaping Bunny, and bottle size. We picked two all-purpose sprays plus specialists for stainless steel, stone countertops and glass cooktops across a range of prices. We did not test these cleaners; facts come from manufacturer pages, with any retailer data named.

What to look for in a kitchen cleaner

Know your surfaces. Natural stone, stainless steel, glass cooktops and wood finishes each have different needs. Check each label’s list of approved and excluded surfaces before using it everywhere.

Use a specialist where it matters. An all-purpose spray covers daily wipe-downs, but stone, stainless steel and glass cooktops often benefit from a cleaner made just for them.

Cleaning is not disinfecting. Most all-purpose cleaners remove dirt and grease but are not registered disinfectants. If you need to kill germs, look for an EPA-registered disinfectant and follow its contact time.

Check scent and certifications. If you are sensitive to fragrance, choose a product labeled fragrance free. Marks such as EPA Safer Choice or Leaping Bunny show a third party has reviewed the formula or animal-testing claims.

Follow the directions. Some cleaners need rinsing, drying or a cool surface, and many should not be mixed with bleach or ammonia. Spot test on a hidden area first.

Frequently asked questions

Can one all-purpose cleaner handle the whole kitchen?

For most daily jobs, yes. Seventh Generation's Free & Clear All Purpose Cleaner is approved for stainless steel, granite, laminate, glass and painted wood, and Mrs. Meyer's Multi-Surface Everyday Cleaner covers countertops, sealed stone and finished wood. Specialty cleaners such as Bar Keepers Friend Cooktop Cleaner or Therapy's stainless steel polish do jobs an all-purpose spray is not made for.

What is safe to use on granite and marble countertops?

Granite Gold Daily Cleaner is made for granite, marble, travertine, quartz and other stone and is pH balanced with no ammonia. Seventh Generation is fine on sealed and unsealed granite but not on marble, and Mrs. Meyer's should only be used on sealed stone.

How do I clean a glass cooktop without scratching it?

Bar Keepers Friend Cooktop Cleaner is made for radiant and induction glass-ceramic cooktops and, per the maker, will not scratch or dull them. Use it on a cool or slightly warm surface, rub gently, rinse within one minute and wipe dry; scrape stubborn residue with a single-edge scraper first.

Which kitchen cleaner is best if I am sensitive to fragrance?

Seventh Generation's Free & Clear All Purpose Cleaner is fragrance free and EPA Safer Choice certified. Mrs. Meyer's, Granite Gold, Therapy and Bar Keepers Friend Cooktop Cleaner all contain fragrance or have a stated scent.

What is the best cleaner for kitchen cabinets?

Pick a cleaner whose label approves your cabinet finish. Seventh Generation All Purpose Cleaner, Free & Clear lists lacquered or painted wood among its approved surfaces, and Mrs. Meyer's Multi-Surface Everyday Cleaner lists finished wood. Spot test on a hidden area first, and follow the label on rinsing and wiping.

What is the best stainless steel cleaner for kitchen appliances?

Therapy Stainless Steel Cleaner & Polish Kit is made for stainless steel only. It comes with a 16 x 16 inch microfiber cloth and is safe on traditional and black stainless steel, and Therapy says it leaves a fingerprint-resistant, streak-free finish. Seventh Generation All Purpose Cleaner, Free & Clear is also approved for stainless steel if you want one spray for more surfaces.

What is the best antibacterial cleaner for kitchen surfaces?

Cleaning is not disinfecting. Most all-purpose cleaners remove dirt and grease but are not registered disinfectants, and the Seventh Generation spray here is not a disinfectant. If you need to kill germs, look for an EPA-registered disinfectant and follow its contact time.
