So, I guess this week is unofficially BBQ week. And, how fitting since Father’s Day is on Sunday! I’ve tried my hand at numerous homemade ketchups and barbecue sauces but every time I present them to my family I get “the look”. And I suppose it’s for good reason. My family is all for me recreating store bought products at home, because most of the time they are just as good or better than the original, but no matter how hard I’ve tried I just haven’t been able to make a killer homemade ketchup, or barbecue sauce that doesn’t contain ketchup. So, if you have a recipe for either of those things, that your family goes gaga for, let me know!

In the meantime, I am guiltlessly sharing my favourite semi-homemade barbecue sauce. This is one that my family loves! You will receive no raised eyebrows for this one, and if you do they will quickly diminish once they have a taste. Sweet, smokey and spicy is the best description for this quick sauce (like throw it all into a blender and puree, quick). And, it would make a great Father’s Day gift.

Most of the dad’s I know love the grill, and this gives them something a little more unique to sauce up all those smoked and charred meats. And, it’s so simple you can stand back and supervise the kidlets while they make it for Dad. After all, homemade gifts are the best, and your kids will beam with pride when they create such deliciousness.

Honey Chipotle Barbecue Sauce
 
For the best flavour make this at least a few hours ahead of time so the flavours have time to meld. Try this spicy sweet sauce on grilled chicken, ribs, shrimp, pulled pork and burgers!
Makes: 1 cup
Ingredients
  • ½ cup good quality ketchup
  • ¼ brown sugar, packed
  • ¼ cup honey
  • 2 chipotle peppers in adobo
  • 2 teaspoons apple cider vinegar
  • 1.5 teaspoon worcestershire sauce
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • pinch pepper
Instructions
  1. Place all ingredients in a blender or food processor and process until smooth, stopping to scrape down sides if needed. Store, covered, in the fridge.
